I just got back from a year abroad with Rotary International and was in Essen, Germany. I had such a great time that now I’m considering applying for a YES scholarship to go abroad to Malaysia where I’ll live for a year and go to school there.

Are Malaysians known for being remotely friendly to Americans, especially girls?

Thanks!

You will be welcome…. However, Malaysia is Asian and multi racial and multi religious, and if this is your first time to this region, culture shock may be a problem…. Make sure you consul with the YES program to understand what you are getting yourself into. Malaysia is very different from Germany.

Well, you might have a few stares here and there but otherwise we are generally friendly.

If you have a habit of foul language, now would be a good time to stop. People here would get annoyed but that’s about it, its just not a good way to know people…

malaysians are generally friendly but tends to be more introverted or less outgoing. they can also be shy to speak, perhaps due to lack of confidence in their language ability.
you need to work a bit to break the ice in most situations.
